Tuesday's Tip - Making a Grocery List

Hopefully you are now making your meal plan in advance.  The next step is to make a grocery list of things you need for these meals.  There many ways in which this saves you money.  Number one, it keeps you out of the stores for last minute items.  Usually, if you have to run to the store last minute you will go to the closest place available, often paying more than you would at the store at which you normally buy groceries.

Grocery stores love it if you forget stuff.  Do you know why?  Have you ever noticed that the milk is all the way at the back of the store.  If the stores were set up stores for convenience, milk should be in the front since it's an item we often need to run out and buy.  But grocery stores are set up for marketing instead.  After all they are out to make a profit.  Nothing wrong with them making profit, but you need to be aware because it can bust your budget.  The stores know you have to pass many things on the way to the back and they're hoping you will impulse and pick up something else to buy.  It's very hard to go into a store and only buy one item.  Often people think, "Well I'm out anyway, I may as well pick up X while I'm here."  These little items don't cost much usually, but added together they can easily bust a budget, especially if your budget is tight.

Making your grocery list also saves gas because you make fewer trips.  And of course it saves time.  I don't know about you, but there's nothing more frustrating than to take 15 minutes total to run after something that would only take me 5 seconds to pull off my shef if I only had it.  And I know we all run short on time.  Most of us are busy women.  So take a few minutes before you go to the store and save yourself money, time, and lots of hassle later.
